Illinois Valley Karate Tournament

I found additional information about the Illinois Valley Karate Tournament, which is scheduled for April 17 at Shabbona Middle School, 725 School Street, in Morris, IL. Registration is from 8:30am - 11:30am and the competition starts at 11am.

The full flyer can be found here: http://metamoramartialarts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/illinois-valley-karate-tournament-2011.pdf

This is a Professional Karate Commission sanctioned event. We’ve never attended a PKC tournament before, so it should be interesting to compare it against UKA, AKA and AOKA tournaments. I checked out the PKC event schedule and it looks packed full of tournaments, manyof them within a four hour drive (with no large bridges in sight). So, if it’s a good event, we may be attending more.

At first blush, it looks like a tournament designed specifically with adult karate-ka in mind:
  • Most of the prizes for the events/divisions are etched glass mugs or medals (instead of trophies). I know that there’s kind of a one-upsmanship thing going on with tournaments: each one strives to give out the biggest and best trophies. But, adult karate-ka get frustrated with storing trophies. It’s seems like an interesting choice and I can’t wait to see them in person. (Even if I only get to see them displayed at the judges table.)
  • There are family discounts. (Woo-hoo!) Competitors (non PKC members) pay $40 to compete. The first additional family member pays a reduced rate of $30 and the second additional family member pays $25.
I would like to show up early so we can watch the Chanbara competition at 10 a.m. Apparently, this is some type of kumite with foam swords. Sounds fun to watch.
