On the way to the gym, I coughed (occasionally) and sniffed (a lot).
“I’m fine.”
Of course, I thought, it’s not really fair to grapple with a bunch of guys spreading my germs all over them. “Maybe I’ll just do drills. I won’t grapple; I won’t get anyone sick.”
I pulled into the parking lot of the gym, parked and laid my head against the steering wheel. It felt wonderfully cool against my head. See, I thought, you have a fever.
“I don’t have a fever,” I sniffed. “I’ve had the heat on high all the way over here.”
I stayed in the car. The next ten minutes were spent arguing with myself. Giving myself convincing reasons to turn around and go home. I also provided equally convincing reasons why I should just go in and muscle it out. (If you’ll pardon the pun.)
“Come on,” I told myself. “You go in and try to work out. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Just then my lower abdomen gave an urgent gurgle. “Oh,” I said. “Yes, that could be embarrassing.”
I texted my apologies to Craig and the guys, pulled out of the parking lot, and drove (much more quickly) back toward home.
